Augmented reality based middle and inner ear surgical procedures

2020

Otologic procedures involve manipulation of small, delicate and complex structures in the temporal bone anatomy which are in close proxmity of critical nerves and blood vessels. Augmented reality (AR) can highly benefit the otological domain by providing supplementary anatomical and navigational information unified on a single display. However, despite being composed of mainly rigid bony structures, the awareness and acceptance of possibilities of AR systems in otology is fairly low. This project aims at developing video-based AR solutions for middle and inner ear surgical procedures. We propose two applications of AR in this regard. In the first application, information about middle ear cle…

Pseudo-haptic Controls for Mid-air Finger-based Menu Interaction

2019

Virtual Reality (VR) is more accessible than ever these days. While topics like performance, motion sickness and presence are well investigated, basic topics as VR User Interfaces (UIs) for menu control are lagging far behind. A major issue is the absence of haptic feedback and naturalness, especially when considering mid-air finger-based interaction in VR, when "grabbable" controllers are not available. In this work, we present and compare the following two visual approaches to mid-air finger-based menu control in VR environments: a planar UI similar to common 2D desktop UIs, and a pseudo-haptic UI based on physical metaphors. The results show that the pseudo-haptic UI performs better in t…

A VR-Enhanced Rollover Car Simulator and Edutainment Application for Increasing Seat Belt Use Awareness

2021

Most countries have active road safety policies that seek the objective of reducing deaths in traffic accidents. One of the main factors in this regard is the awareness of the safety measures, one of the most important being the correct usage of the seat belt, a device that is known to save thousands of lives every year. The presented work shows a VR-enhanced edutainment application designed to increase awareness on the use of seat belts. For this goal, a motorized rollover system was developed that, synchronized with a VR application (shown in a head-mounted display for each user inside a real car), rolls over this car with up to four passengers inside. This way, users feel the sensations …

Virtual articulator for the analysis of dental occlusion: An update

2010

The future of dental practice is closely linked to the utilization of computer-based technology, specifically virtual reality, which allows the dental surgeon to simulate true life situations in patients. The virtual articulator has been designed for the exhaustive analysis of static and dynamic occlusion, with the purpose of substituting mechanical articulators and avoiding their errors. These tools will help both odontologists and dental prosthetists to provide the best individualized treatment for each patient. The present review analyzes the studies published in the literature on the design, functioning and applications of virtual articulators. A Medline-PubMed search was made of dental…

AUGMENTED REALITY

2011

Already used in very specific areas such as in military and medical or academic research, in 2009 thanks to improved technology, augmented reality is to reach wider audiences and as information campaigns, advertising-augmented published in newspapers or on the network, and through a growing number of applications for mobile phones, particularly iPhone. "The Augmented Reality on the desktop computer is based on the use of markers, or ARtags, and stylized drawings, which are shown to the webcam, are recognized by the PC, and which are overlaid in real-time multimedia content: video, audio , 3D objects, etc.. Normally, applications of augmented reality are based on Adobe Flash technology and t…

Virtual Vehicles Manager: a java virtual reality environment for distributed multi vehicles dynamics control and simulation

2007

This paper describes a lightweight, full portable software environment for development, simulation and control of vehicles. All the software is developed in Java so there are many advantages as portability, multithreading distribution etc. This environment simulates the vehicles integrating their non-linear differential equation systems. The equation systems can easily be modified changing that representation class so it is easy to manage different vehicles. The scenario is displayed as a 3D virtual reality environment in which all the objects are rendered using a combination of 3 d primitive. It is also possible the use of pre-built 3 d objects loaded from files in 3 ds format. The softwar…

Minimally invasive cerebral cavernoma surgery using keyhole approaches - solutions for technique-related limitations.

2009

Cavernomas are often small in size and located in difficultly accessible regions. Preoperative identification of the ideal surgical approach as well as the precise intraoperative implementation of the surgical plan are of critical importance for successful surgery. While aiming for minimally invasive surgical techniques and maximally effective cavernoma resection, we envisaged that employing a combination of precise and technically sophisticated virtual reality surgery planning, modern navigation systems with augmented reality features and endoscope-assisted surgical techniques should contribute to achieve this goal. Between December 2002 and November 2005, 66 patients were operated on for …

Detection of surfaces for projection of texture

2007

Augmented reality is used to improve color segmentation on human's body or on precious no touch artefacts. We propose a technique based on structured light to project texture on a real object without any contact with it. Such techniques can be apply on medical application, archeology, industrial inspection and augmented prototyping. Coded structured light is an optical technique based on active stereovision which allows shape acquisition. By projecting a light pattern onto the surface of an object and capturing images with a camera, a large number of correspondences can be found and 3D points can be reconstructed by means of triangulation.
